Hogs

Lucky Craft fan, Dwight, was fishing Lake Athabasca in northern Saskatchewan a couple weeks ago, and brought in this trophy Pike (pictured below) on a Lucky Craft Pointer 100.  While staying at Lakers Unlimited fishing camp on Johnston Island, Dwight caught the 32-pound monster on a St. Croix Legend Elite Model rod with 20-pound braid and a 125-pound fluorocarbon leader.

“The fish measured 49-inches long and had a girth of 21.75 inches,” Dwight told The Daily Crank.  “My buddies and I have been chasing a 30-pound Pike for more than 15 years. Thanks to Ian Besse, our guide, and Lucky Craft, for their help in fulfilling my Pike dream.”

Dwight was actually throwing a Pointer 100 in an old saltwater color (pictured below), casting a drop-off in 4- to 8-feet of water.  He would cast in from deeper water and use a twitching motion to attract the fish.  According to Dwight, the fish was only hooked with one hook point on the rear treble, and he and his fishing buddies kept thinking the hook was going to pull out anytime.  After it was all said and done, Dwight knew he’d chosen the right baits to bring along.

“Usually we cast much bigger and heavier jerkbaits, but I decided to take along some finesse-sized baits to relieve the strain of casting all day and to help trigger lethargic or negative Pike,” Dwight said.  “I have caught some very nice largemouth and smallmouth bass on the Pointer 100 DD, 100, 128 and Staysee 90, so I know their effectiveness.”

After 12 tries, Dwight and his buddies were able to lead the head of the Pike into the cradle and finally land her, and after some photo ops, they released her.

Thanks for sharing your fishing trip with us, Dwight, and we’re very glad you were able to catch your dream fish.  Keep it up!
