Ehrler Had a Blasta on Shasta!!

Ehrler Captures First FLW Western Series Event of 2010

Lucky Craft Pro Brent Ehrler started 2010 with a bang this past weekend at Lake Shasta, California, scoring a victory in the FLW Western Series event.  Ehrler weighed in 20 bass over the four day event for a total of 41 lbs, 4 oz.

Brent had just made it home when we caught up with him and he talked about how he put the winning pattern together.

“I had two main techniques, a wacky rig and a drop shot,” said Ehrler.  “I mainly used the wacky rig to find and locate fish and when I would see the fish on my graph, I would put the drop shot right down on his head.

Ehrler felt these two techniques were historically strong at Shasta and they had the best opportunity to produce.

“I was committed to the wacky rig and drop shot.  I didn’t want to fight it which actually made it better for me because I was totally focused on these two baits and did not let other things distract me.

“With 10 minutes to go on the last day of practice, I graphed a spot I thought looked pretty good.  I didn’t even get to fish it, but I felt it had potential.  So on day one of the tournament, I didn’t even go to that spot until 1pm and I was able to fill out my limit pretty quickly, as well as my co-angler.

This spot he graphed at the last day of practice was key for Ehrler. It was a main lake point with a big flat off to one side as well as adjacent to a deeper flat. The fish were positioned in 35 to 45 feet of water.

“The 2nd day, I was culling in 30 minutes and only spent about 2 hours there total.  Day three was about the same thing, an early limit and trying to cull up for no more than three hours.  Clifford Perch was also fishing the same spot and and I know between and my co-angler and I we caught at least 80 fish off this one spot.

“On the final day, the fish didn’t bite nearly as well.  I had to grind it out on that spot and eventually got what I needed, but it was much tougher than the first few days.”

With a victory last year at Lake Havasu, Ehrler is fishing with a lot of confidence right now.

“It feels good to fish well and start the year off this way.  I put a lot of hard work into my fishing and practice.  I fish daylight to dark in practice and I really stay focused. It’s great to see it pay off.

Up next for Ehrler is the first FLW Tour event of 2010 on the Red River in Shreveport, Louisiana, February 10 – 13.
